Even though our music covers numerous genres, for simplicity we can
break them down to two categories: Music that sounds like Louisiana, and
music that doesn't. Of course, that depends upon your exposure and age,
but here goes a general description of each.
1. Music that sounds like Louisiana
Most people know the hopping sounds of Zydeco, the patterns of Dixieland
jazz, and perhaps the strains of Cajun music. Even the modern Zydeco and
Cajun bands display a recognizable Louisiana musical emphasis. Also,
many of you are probably old or curious enough to know of Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong
, a legendary New Orleans pop and jazz talent and maybe even Fats Domino
and his laid back but energetic pop hits of the 50's and 60's. This type
of music makes up what many people would recognize as being Louisiana or
New Orleans music.
2. Music that doesn't sound like Louisiana
These songs may not be the first ones that come to mind when you think
about Louisiana music, but there is a definite connection. Use the
following listing to make that connection. New Orleans piano wizards
From Jelly Roll Morton to Eubie Blake, New Orleans has many piano
legends. The range is from ragtime to the rollicking stride and barrelhouse styles that are so renown in New
Orleans.
Songs about Louisiana or New Orleans Billie Holliday's " Do you know
what it means to miss New Orleans, Paul Simon's " Take me to the Mardi
Gras", Hank Williams' "Jambalaya", Mary Chapin Carpenter's " Down at the
twist and shout" are all examples of songs that are clearly about
Louisiana. They often incorporate traditional Louisianan instruments and
styles.
New Orleans funk The Meters, Dr John, The Neville Brothers, and the Wild
Magnolias are examples of this type of New Orleans music. It is an
indigenous New Orleans treasure.
Oldies From the semi-crazed songs of Jerry Lee Lewis to hits such as
"Tell it Like it Is" by Aaron Neville, we have included many of these.
Lots of soul hits but very eclectic.
Contemporary N.O. Jazz The Marsalis family of musicians, Harry Connick,
Jr. and many more.
Contemporary Louisiana artist Marc Broussard, Mary Gauthier, Lucinda
Williams, and the Subdudes are some of the currently popular Louisiana
artists that sometimes tie their songs to their Louisiana roots.
Louisiana Blues Whether from New Orleans or the SW prairies, there is a
rich blues tradition in Louisiana. From New Orleans' Champion Jack
Dupree to the modern guitar blues of Tab Benoit, you may well hear
something in this vein.
